SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Esteemed Dominican pianist and composer Michel Camilo recently held a master class for a large group of young musicians at the Eduardo Brito National Theater, an event coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and Berklee Santo Domingo 2026.
The session drew aspiring artists from across the country and was attended by several notable figures, including Minister of Culture Roberto Ángel Salcedo; Amaury Sánchez, Vice Minister of Creativity and Artistic Training; and María Martínez Iturriaga, Senior Vice President of Global Programs and Partners at Berklee College of Music.
Also present were Edwin de los Santos, President of the AES Dominicana Foundation and General Manager of Itabo; Marinella Sallent, General Director of Fine Arts; Paola González, Director of the National Conservatory of Music; and Javier Vargas, Coordinator for Berklee in Santo Domingo.
Before the master class began, Minister Salcedo highlighted that over 300 young Dominicans have already had the opportunity to study at the prestigious U.S. institution through programs developed in the country. He reaffirmed the Ministry of Culture's commitment to promoting artistic education as a cornerstone of the Dominican Republic's cultural growth.
Salcedo also emphasized the invaluable presence of a figure like Michel Camilo, noting that his participation ensures the transmission of knowledge across generations and strengthens the essential values of Dominican culture. He encouraged participants to make the most of the educational experience.
Camilo expressed his satisfaction in sharing his expertise and career journey with young Dominican talents. He stressed the importance of boldness, maintaining a positive outlook, and cultivating originality in the pursuit of one's unique sound as critical tools for musical development.
The high-level educational and artistic exchange was part of Berklee in Santo Domingo 2026's special agenda. This intensive study program runs from January 6 to 9 and features classes in music theory, ear training, improvisation, ensemble performance, composition, and music production.
The program also includes auditions, interviews, and rehearsals led by a team of distinguished Berklee College of Music faculty. During this period, auditions will be held for the Michel Camilo Scholarship, a full-tuition award valued at $250,000, which will enable an outstanding student to study at Berklee College of Music.
Berklee in Santo Domingo 2026 is organized by the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with Berklee College of Music, the General Directorate of Fine Arts, and the National Conservatory of Music. It receives sponsorship from the AES Dominicana Foundation and Itabo, reinforcing a commitment to academic excellence, international opportunities, and the sustainable development of Dominican musical talent.
