Samarkand, Uzbekistan – Dominican Republic Culture Minister Roberto Ángel Salcedo reaffirmed his nation's commitment to leveraging culture as a strategic pillar for sustainable development, social cohesion, and peace during the 43rd UNESCO General Conference here.

Speaking at the General Policy Debate in Samarkand, Salcedo detailed the country's advancements in implementing international instruments it has signed, particularly those focused on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.

The minister highlighted several key initiatives, including the creation of the National Inventory of Afro-descendant Intangible Cultural Heritage and the RD-Colombia Heritage Rhythms Teaching Program. He also noted the Dominican Republic's involvement in the regional "Communities for Heritage" project, a UNESCO-coordinated effort funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Salcedo further reported on the approval of a buffer zone and risk management plan for Santo Domingo's Colonial City, fulfilling commitments that had been pending since 2006. He also addressed progress in protecting underwater cultural heritage and the nation's efforts in international cooperation for the restitution of cultural property.

Prior to his address to the plenary, Salcedo held a bilateral meeting with Ernesto Ottone, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Culture. Their discussion focused on technical cooperation and institutional strengthening within the cultural and heritage sectors.

Through its participation, the Dominican Republic underscored its active role in advocating for and promoting cultural diversity, as well as its dedication to UNESCO's core values and regional integration through dialogue and culture.
