AZUA, Dominican Republic – The Dominican government has disbursed RD $48 million to 80 residents of Monte Grande whose land was impacted by the reservoir of the Monte Grande Dam Multiple Project. The National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (Indrhi) oversaw the latest round of economic compensation.
The payments, distributed through checks and bank transfers, were part of an ongoing process to indemnify community members. Indrhi provided technical and social support, ensuring individual case verification and transparent resource delivery.
This phase prioritizes residents most significantly affected by the dam's construction, following an established order. Previous compensation efforts have taken place in Los Güiros, San Simón, La Meseta, and Hato Nuevo Cortés.
Families located upstream, at the tail end of the reservoir, are slated to receive compensation in the next phase of the process.
Indrhi Deputy Director Jhonny Jiménez, representing Executive Director Olmedo Caba Romano, led the event. Jiménez stated that these actions are carried out under instructions from President Luis Abinader, reaffirming the government's commitment to every family affected by the hydraulic infrastructure project.
Jiménez explained that the compensation process employs technical and social criteria to ensure fairness and order in fund distribution, addressing areas with the highest impact first.
Other Indrhi officials, including environmental advisor Juan Fulvio Ureña, and directors Elvis Payano, Juan Carlos Nova, and Manuel Pineda, attended the activity alongside local authorities and community leaders.
To date, the Dominican government, through Indrhi, has previously disbursed RD $604 million in indemnities to landowners and community members within the dam's influence zone. An additional RD $83 million has been allocated for the acquisition of land designated for displaced families.
The Monte Grande Dam Project continues to advance as a strategic initiative for the country's water, agricultural, and social development. Compensation efforts will progressively continue until all involved communities have been covered.
