SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — President Luis Abinader on Sunday inaugurated a new multi-purpose sports facility at the 16 de Agosto Military Camp and shared a traditional Christmas lunch with more than 2,500 soldiers, reaffirming his government's recognition of the military's daily service to the nation.
\nThe ceremony was led by President Abinader, alongside Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz, and Army Commander Maj. Gen. Jorge Iván Camino Pérez.
\nThe new 1,200-square-meter sports pavilion is designed to enhance the physical, recreational, and training activities for military personnel stationed at the camp.
\nDuring the inauguration, Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz highlighted the facility as the 33rd project delivered in his 15 months in office, a direct initiative from President Abinader. Cruz noted the president's significant commitment to sports, extending beyond civilian programs to now include military athletics.
\nThe minister detailed the modern structure, which features a high-level metallic framework, state-of-the-art LED lighting, and a FIBA-certified synthetic floor. The facility also includes spectator stands, restrooms, offices, locker rooms, and storage, representing an investment of approximately 30 million Dominican pesos.
\nKey amenities of the multi-purpose complex include a specialized synthetic playing surface, two backboards with hoops, an electronic scoreboard, a concrete block perimeter wall with cyclone fencing, a complete electrical system, mixed-use bathrooms, a multi-purpose room, and a cistern.
\nFollowing the inauguration, President Abinader joined the more than 2,500 soldiers for their annual Christmas luncheon, an event that has become a cherished tradition within the Armed Forces.
\nAddressing the troops, Abinader stated that the gathering served as an annual tradition to express gratitude for their dedication to defending national sovereignty. "I am proud of your work, and with each passing day, I become more committed to improving the living conditions and overall circumstances of the Dominican Republic's army," the president said.
\nHe told the soldiers that the greatest legacy they could leave their families by the end of 2025 was their work, commitment to the Republic and their homeland, and above all, their honesty.
\nDuring the event, the head of state moved among the tables, engaging with soldiers, listening to their concerns, and personally thanking them for their commitment and service to the country. This annual gesture symbolizes the government's direct acknowledgment of the quiet, sacrificial, and essential work performed by each member of the Army to ensure the security, stability, and sovereignty of the Dominican Republic.
\nArmy Commander Jorge Iván Camino Pérez offered words of welcome, thanking the president on behalf of the men and women of the military institution for his support. He also extended wishes for success, a Merry Christmas, and a prosperous 2026 to all officers and soldiers, hoping prosperity would reach every Dominican home.
