Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic — Authorities in the Dominican Republic temporarily closed a floating bridge connecting the National District with Santo Domingo East on Friday, October 24. The measure aims to allow a buildup of river debris to clear the Ozama River.
The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) announced the provisional closure, effective immediately. The ministry indicated the action was necessary to facilitate the unimpeded flow of water lilies and other organic materials currently being carried by the river's current.
Given the current low vehicular traffic in the area, the agency stated the bridge would remain closed until further notice. Its reopening will be announced in coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transport (Digesset), the Dominican Navy, and the Military and Police Commission (Comipol).
Minister Eduardo Estrella reiterated his call for residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to remain in their homes as long as the rains persist, always heeding official guidance.
The Public Works Ministry has deployed emergency teams and brigades to strategic locations across Greater Santo Domingo and other provinces. These crews are actively engaged in cleaning, removing debris, and clearing filter wells and storm drains in areas prone to flooding, responding to various incidents caused by the ongoing weather system.
