Italian architect Roberto Copa designed the village in 1976 and it was build by Charles Buldhorn(President of Golf & Western Corporation who did the development of Casa De Campo in the 1970’)as a birthdaygift to his daughter ! In Altos de Chavon you will find abakery, supermarket, fine dining open air first class restaurants, bars, an art gallery weaving and ceramic studios, a regional museum ofarchaeology that documents the island rich Pre-Columbian Taino heritageand a Design School affiliated to the Parsons School of Design in New York. The village also have a 5,000 seat open air Greek style amphitheatre, which was inaugurated in 1982 by Frank Sinatra with The Concert for the Americas. Remember to try the French Bakery !! Other Attractions & Sightseeing: Isla Catalina: The Isla Catalina is a small inhabited island situated just off the coast of La Romana. There are daily excursions in boats (20 minutes journey) that can be booked to take you to the island. The island features magnificent coral reefs and tropical fish. Saona Island: Saona island with its 110 km2 is the largest island in the Dominican Republic. The island was discovered on the 15 of September 1494 by Christopher Columbus. White sandy beaches and turquoise waters surround the island. The island have fishing village named Mano Juan - here you can find handicrafts made by the local people, at a very reasonable prices. The excursions to Saona Island are organized from Bayahibe. Fun Fun Cave: The Fun Fun Cave is the largest cave in the Caribbean, running 7 km's underground. The cave features stalactites, stalagmites, cave art,large corridors and subterranean rivers. Tours include equipment, breakfast, lunch, beverages, horse ride in the Haitises National Park, Cueva de las Maravillas: Cueva de las Maravillas is located between San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana; here you can find rupestrian art. The caves were recently awarded with the Landscape Architecture-Public Award from the BienalMiami + Beach. Scuba Diving: Catalina Island The island is home to the wall, a coral reef wall of more than 90 feetwith excellent visibility where you can see very large fish, such asgrouper and different species of coral. The National Park of the East Here you can find a wide variety of coral formations. A popular area among divers is Saona Island; this island is protected and has wealth of wild and marine life, such as whales, sea turtles and sharks. St. Georges This is a well visited site by divers. St. George is a sunken barge near the Club Viva Dominicus. The ship was sunk to create a natural protected habitat for coral reefs that are in danger of extinction. Horseback Riding Rancho Cumayasa is about 10 minutes from La Romana and offers horse riding beside rivers and other routes.
